Abstract

Recreation tourism can be a major contributor to both visitor well-being and to destination development, but its long term success will ultimately be determined by more than just the number of visitors it attracts. The paper reviews the literature on visitor motivations and experience outcomes, environmental responsibility, sustainable destination management, accessibility and the role of digital technologies. The research indicates that visitor attitudes and motivations are key drivers of behaviour in natural environments and that interpretation and education can be used to promote more responsible recreation. There is also a clear emphasis on the need to monitor the environment, manage visitor numbers, protect sensitive areas and involve the local community. Accessibility and the provision of inclusive services are seen as vital to ensure that all people, regardless of ability or need, can take part in recreation. There is a notable gap in the literature in terms of integrated research on these issues, particularly in Uzbekistan and Central Asia. The paper concludes that sustainable recreation tourism will require a balanced approach which takes into account visitor satisfaction, environmental protection, inclusion and community needs
